Silent Social

ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease. This loss of motor neurons leads to progressive paralysis of the voluntary muscles. Approximately 2,500 to 3,000 Canadians currently live with ALS. Two or three Canadians are diagnosed with ALS daily, while another two to three lose their battle with ALS every day. Half of those living with ALS in Canada live in Ontario.

Silent Social is an awareness program by ALS Ontario to create awareness of ALS and help support those who have been affected by ALS. People participating in Silent Social voluntarily choose to share in a moment of silence to pledge their support in providing quality care for those living with ALS and to remember those who have/had ALS.

Silent Social is to recognize the voices that we see taken away by ALS. It is to pledge a moment of silence not when you as an individual feel like taking it, but a moment of silence that all participants take together.

The idea behind Silent Social is to bring together a community of those whose lives have been touched by ALS and raise awareness of the devastating effects of the paralyzing disease not only on the individual but their families and communities. We seek to raise awareness, to provide the necessary equipment and support services to those living with ALS.
